The four-outfit plan
Work backwards from the functions rather than forwards from the shops. This is the sequence we build with most grooms:

Where to spend and where to save
Wedding budgets are finite, so allocate deliberately. The ceremony outfit deserves the largest share — it appears in the album more than everything else combined. The haldi kurta deserves the least; it is going to be ruined by design. Shoes are the most common false economy: mojari that cut into your feet in hour two will show on your face in every photograph taken afterwards.
Renting the ceremony sherwani and the reception tuxedo, then buying the sangeet and haldi pieces, is the split that leaves most grooms satisfied. You keep what you will wear again and you do not pay full price for two garments destined for a cupboard.
Fittings: plan two, not one
A single fitting is optimistic. The first visit sets the measurements; the second confirms the alterations landed and catches the things nobody notices on a hanger — a collar that rides up when you raise your arms, a churidar that bunches at the ankle, a dupatta that will not stay pinned. Leave a week between them. Grooms who compress this into one visit are the ones adjusting their outfit throughout the ceremony.
A short timeline
- 8 weeks out: decide the outfit for each function, and lock colours against the bride's.
- 6 weeks out: first fitting; confirm rentals and reserve dates.
- 4 weeks out: choose accessories — safa, mala, kalgi, mojari — against the finished outfits.
- 2 weeks out: second fitting, final alterations, break in the shoes.
- 3 days out: collect everything, check each set is complete, hang it out.
